Diabetes NSW was honoured to receive a cheque for $35,000 from Kareela Golf & Social Club today, thanks to Lance Thompson, their caterer and former professional Rugby League Player.

Thompson, who played for St George Dragons and Cronulla Sharks, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 29.

Mr Dennis Skinner, General Manager of Kareela Golf & Social Club, presented the cheque to Diabetes NSW today, Monday 2 February.

The funds were raised at a Sportsman’s Luncheon organised by Lance Thompson and held at the club last year. The ticket-only event was attended by sporting personalities including Paul Gallen, Sonny Bill Williams, Josh Dugan, Ben Hornby and Ricky Stuart. Entertainment from Shannon Noll kept the guests entertained, alongside silent auctions, live auctions, raffles and competitions.

“I am delighted to accept this cheque on behalf of Diabetes NSW,” said CEO Sturt Eastwood. “Raising this amount of money is a huge achievement and we would like to express our thanks and gratitude to everyone involved. Diabetes affects 1 in 4 Australians and funds we receive will go to raising awareness of diabetes, supporting research and funding children’s camps throughout the state.”
