If you have diabetes, now is the time to consider having an Influenza or flu vaccination in time for winter. People with diabetes have an elevated risk of flu-related complications.
Did you know . . ?
• Influenza can make existing illnesses such as diabetes, heart conditions and severe asthma worse.
• Not enough people between 40 and 65 years old with risk conditions are being vaccinated.
• The majority of those who are hospitalised with influenza are under the age of 65 and have conditions such as diabetes, heart or lung disease
• No vaccine is 100% effective, however vaccination is very effective in reducing the severity of symptoms and can help keep you out of hospital.
• If you do become ill, see your doctor early as there are prescription treatments available that can reduce the severity and duration of influenza, if taken in the first 48 hours of the illness.
• The Australian Government provides free flu vaccination for people over 65 years of age
• So ask your doctor about having an annual flu vaccination - and take a positive step towards staying healthy next winter.
