Healthy eating – Getting the right balance

When it comes to managing diabetes, it can be easy to focus all our attention on carbohydrates, so much so that we often forget about the bigger picture. While it is certainly important to include good types of carbs regularly and in the right amounts, other nutrients also play an important role in our overall health and wellbeing. Having a balanced approach towards eating means that we are getting a good mix of carbohydrate, protein, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals and fibre.

What does balance look like?

The key to balance is to include a variety of foods from the five core food groups. These food groups make up the ‘main circle’ below – it may help to think of it like a pie chart and shows healthy proportions from each food group. By mixing up our food choices from these groups daily, weekly and even seasonally we are more likely to get the best balance of nutrients.
