Information for teachers and schools
Teachers and school staff play an important role in helping children living with type 1 diabetes manage their condition.
Pre-school and school aged children living with type 1 diabetes need to monitor and manage their condition when they are at school. It is important that they have the support and guidance they need to manage their diabetes safely. Younger children may need full support while older children may be able to do this quite independently.
Diabetes NSW & ACT offers a range of practical resources for teachers and schools that help to ensure they can confidently support children with diabetes in their care, including:
- Teacher Training Seminars to build and expand knowledge of diabetes management for school age children
- Webinars and videos to help school staff and students understand and learn about type 1 diabetes
- Diabetes Management and Action Plans designed specifically for schools
- Posters and visual aids
- Helpful contacts within the Department of Education
These resources have been designed to increase awareness and understanding of managing type 1 diabetes in a school environment and to improve the overall educational experience of children living with the condition.
