Yvonne Appleby

Type 2

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, after being ill for years, in February 2011 aged 46. At the time, without changing my diet or lifestyle at all, I’d become very tired – constantly exhausted – no matter how much sleep I got, I suffered headaches, sore throats and ear infections and quickly gained a very noticeable 20kg. Eventually the GP diagnosed me with type 2 diabetes.

I felt shocked, angry about why it took so long to diagnose and relieved because I knew what the problem was. The first thing I did was went to the pharmacist who informed me about blood glucose metres (there were a lot to choose from!), and just a few days after taking medication for diabetes I felt a lot better.

I then called Diabetes NSW to find out what else I could do and joined their Type 2 Education Group where I got an overview of how life would be as I learned how to deal with life day-to-day, how to eat well, how to exercise and how to shop effectively. The Customer Care Line told me what my numbers meant and offered support and the information sheets on the website were extremely useful, and are still valuable today. Overall Diabetes NSW has helped empower me to accept and manage my diabetes and be open to all the wonderful opportunities that have presented since my diagnosis.

Since my diagnosis, I have taken up dancing and lost 15kg in total and now embrace life!
