Get happy by letting goWednesday, 22 January 2020
Most people kick off January by creating resolutions that aim to add healthy habits to their daily life. Which is great, but they don’t always work – which is ok. So why not think a little differently and try letting go of some things instead.
With that in mind, here are a few things you might want to consider leaving behind for a happier year in 2020.
Don’t compare yourself to others on social media
In this era of social media, it always appears that everyone is living their best life — that is, everyone except you. But social media is really a highlight reel of the best of people’s days, weeks or events.
So rather than using social media to compare your life to the pictures you see, why not use it to reach out to an individual or group you admire and want to connect with. Send a DM, ask for advice or join a group conversation. You might be surprised at the new connections you create just by reaching out rather than being an onlooker.
Don’t let fear hold you back from something you want to do
As you go through life you don’t want to be kicking yourself for letting things slide or not doing things you always wanted to do because of feelings like fear or shame. These are really only problematic feelings because you’ve told yourself that you should feel that way.
So this year try to let go of your fear your fears and try that activity or hobby you’ve always wanted to do.
Stop worrying about things you cannot control
It’s unrealistic to suggest giving up worry or stress entirely ― these feelings are a normal part of life. Instead, try to focus those things you can take action on.
Focus your thoughts on things you can change and let the rest go. It will take some practice to learn this skill, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll find that you’ll worry less.
Let go of grudges or grievances
Research shows holding onto a grudge or anger for longer than necessary can be toxic for your physical and mental health. The start of the year is a good time to work on letting go of old baggage by either trying to repair a strained relationship or close the chapter on relationships that are no longer helpful or healthy. While saying goodbye to can be tough, the closure it brings can be very freeing.
We hope you find these tips useful in helping you to let some negative thoughts and actions go. It might take a while to change old habits but it’s worth a try if it leads to a happier and healthier year.
