Diabetes never stops. It is life-long, life-threatening and the complications are very serious. Diabetes significantly increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, blindness, limb amputations and kidney failure.
Even when no serious complications are present, diabetes wears people down because of the relentlessness of diabetes management. Diabetes distress, while it is bad enough by itself, can too easily trigger depression. Sadly, research shows people living with diabetes are two to three times more likely than the general population to suffer from depression.
It’s not hard to imagine why. Even before they’ve opened their eyes in the morning, people living with diabetes face added pressures.
Blood glucose levels that do all the wrong things when they’ve done all the right things. Ongoing finger prick tests, insulin dosing and even sometimes equipment failures. Consistently having to make the right decision to keep on top of diabetes management. Advice from others can be well-meant but is not always helpful. This is the reality for many who live with diabetes. Which is why they need year round assistance, beyond just clinical care.
People living with diabetes may only be with a medical professional one day a year. Diabetes NSW & ACT is there, with a connected community, advocacy services and psychological care the other 364 days a year. But we can only do this vital work with the help of caring people who donate.
Please start donating monthly. Diabetes never stops. Neither do we.
