2018 Diabetes Australia Research Grant Awards

Diabetes NSW & ACT and Diabetes Australia are delighted to award grants totalling $728,023 to 13 researchers from NSW and the ACT during National Diabetes Week.

On Thursday 12 July, guests packed a function room at the Shangri-La Hotel to receive the awards presented by Diabetes Australia CEO, Professor Greg Johnson, and Mark Coure, MP representing the Hon Brad Hazzard MP, Minister for Health and Minister for Medical Research.

The recipients were:

  • Professor Trevor Biden – Garven Institute of Medical Research
  • Dr Kristen Bubb – University of Sydney
  • Professor Wah Cheung – Westmead Hospital
  • Professor Stephen Colagiuri – University of Sydney
  • Professor Kim Donaghue – The Children’s Hospital at Westmead
  • Dr James Krycer – University of Sydney
  • Dr Danqing Min – University of Sydney
  • Professor Chris Nolan – Australian National University
  • Dr Kwok Leung Ong – University of New South Wales
  • Dr Carsten Schmitz-Peiffer – Garvan Institute of Medical Research
  • Dr Carmel Smart – University of Newcastle
  • Dr Jacqueline Stoeckli – University of Sydney
  • Professor Peter Thorn – University of Sydney
  • Dr Kristine McGrath – University of Technology Sydney

 

The grants go towards a wide spectrum of diabetes research projects covering prevention, management and work towards a cure.

Sturt Eastwood, CEO of Diabetes NSW & ACT, congratulated the recipients and thanked them for their outstanding efforts in the field of diabetes research. He additionally acknowledged Novo Nordisk for their support of the event, the Shangri-La hotel and the MPs in attendance.

Each year Diabetes Australia administers the delivery of The Diabetes Australian Research Program to fund vital diabetes research projects across Australia. In 2018 the total awarded nationally was $3.5 million.
