Expanded access to CGM subsidies from 1 March 2019

Late last year, the Federal Government announced an additional investment of $100 million to expand free access to glucose-monitoring technology through the NDSS. This initiative, comes into effect on 1 March 2019, and will see fully subsidised CGM products expanded to include the following groups:

  • children and young people with conditions very similar to type 1 diabetes who require insulin;
  • women with type 1 diabetes who are pregnant, post-pregnancy or actively planning pregnancy; and
  • people with type 1 diabetes aged 21 years or older who have concessional status, and have a high clinical need to access CGM products.

The Government already provides access to subsidised CGM products for children and young people with type 1 diabetes, under 21 years of age. The additional funding means from 1 March a further 37,000 Australians will have access to CGM technology.

While this will improve the lives and give peace of mind to thousands of Australians with type 1 diabetes, Diabetes NSW & ACT together with Diabetes Australia, our state affiliated bodies and partners in the diabetes community will continue to advocate for greater access to CGM for the broader diabetes community.

Check your eligibility

To access subsidised CGM products through the NDSS, you will need to be assessed by an authorised health professional which could include an endocrinologist, credentialed diabetes educator, medical doctor, paediatrician or nurse practitioner to determine whether you are eligible and to ensure that the use of CGM will help as part of your diabetes management.

More information about the eligibility criteria for each group eligible for subsided products can be found on the NDSS website. Click on relevant link below to be taken to this important information.
