World Diabetes Day 2019 celebrates families

This World Diabetes Day we’re celebrating families and showing our appreciation for the things they do every day to care for those living with diabetes.
There are currently 1.3 million Australians living with diabetes. For every person who is living with diabetes, there are family, friends, health professionals and carers offering support which doubles or maybe even triples the number of people dealing with the challenges of diabetes every day.
Tell us about your diabetes family
We’d love to hear all about your diabetes family. Share your story and acknowledge those who are most important in helping you manage your diabetes by posting their photo and a short message on social media. Tag us and use the hashtag #mydiabetesfamily.
Help us spread the word about diabetes signs and symptoms
Early diagnosis and treatment of diabetes is the key in helping to prevent and delay life-threatening complications. If type 1 diabetes is not detected early, it can be fatal. While a delayed diagnosis of type 2 diabetes can lead to complications like blindness, amputation, kidney or heart disease.
Help us raise awareness about the signs and symptoms of diabetes. Download these posters and share them in your workplace, community, school or with friends.
Join our diabetes family
Diabetes NSW & ACT is here to support the 447,000 people in NSW and the ACT currently living with diabetes. We provide a range of educational programs covering everything from diabetes management, diet, exercise and emotional wellbeing. We offer training programs for teachers and carers looking after children with type 1 in their care and we connect you to others living with diabetes so you can create supportive networks in your area.
Caring for someone with diabetes
The role families and friends play in the care and support for people living with diabetes can’t be underestimated. For the person living with diabetes, knowing they have the care and support of loved ones makes a big difference to their physical and emotional wellbeing.
But remember, if you’re a carer it’s important to make sure you have the support you need too. Don’t forget you can call our dedicated Helpline on 1300 342 238 if you need some extra support.
Did you know that a healthy lifestyle which includes a healthy diet and exercise can delay or prevent nearly 60% of type 2 diabetes? When families and friends eat healthy meals and exercises together, everyone benefits and it encourages behaviour that can help prevent type 2 diabetes.
