Young men top consumers of sugary drinks
Monday, 19 October 2015Young men aged between 14-30 years are the top consumers of sugar-sweetened beverages, drinking up to 1.5 litres a day, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
While the median amount consumed across the population is around 375 mls a day (the size of a typical can), Louise Gates, Director of Health from the ABS, said males in the 14-18 year range, who drank sugar-sweetened beverages, were consuming the equivalent of 16 teaspoons of sugar a day.
Good news from the ABS report showed a 9% drop in the number of Australian consuming sugar-sweetened beverages. However, this was tempered by the revelation that there has been an increase from 8% to 10% in the consumption of artificially sweetened beverages.
